Wonderful, fabulous.
There is no bad seat in the house at the Palace of Fine Arts! All 3 pieces were very different and outstanding. For a rather small dance troupe, if the dancing and technique isn't fabulous... no one would pay to go! This company is well worth the money to see. Every performance and season is different. The first contemporary piece was full of energy and life- it had romance, friendship, carefree enjoyment. The second piece, Medea was very sensual and dark. The costumes were unbelievable and the story line was easy to follow. The 3rd piece to Sinatra was simply great... it is always so nice to see traditional ballet performed to singers and standards. It is worth your time and energy to support the Smuin Ballet! Keep the dancing alive! One side note... long intermissions... bring a book. But understand- there are only 12 dancers in the group- they all perform every number and need time to change so the ambiance is completely different for each piece!

Smuin Ballet never disappoints. If I weren't going out of town, I'd go see it again -- and maybe a third time!

Smuin Ballet begins its 2009-2010 season with an exciting world premiere by Smuin Ballet Choreographer-in-Residence Amy Seiwert. Seiwert’s World Premiere is accompanied by music from Grammy Award-winning group Kronos Quartet’s album Pieces of Africa, which reached number one on Billboard’s Top World Albums chart. The program continues with Michael Smuin’s Medea, a ballet of spellbinding theatrical power, weaving a story of passion, jealousy, and bloodthirsty revenge. And finally, a tribute-in-dance to the Chairman of the Board with Fly Me to the Moon, paying homage to the songs made famous by Frank Sinatra. “When Sinatra sings, you naturally want to dance,” said choreographer Michael Smuin. Fly Me to the Moon is the embodiment of the smooth and stylish melodies that have inspired generations, including his renditions of “The Way You Look Tonight,” “That’s Life,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” and many more.
Smuin Ballet was founded in 1994 by the renowned choreographer Michael Smuin, formerly the Director of San Francisco Ballet. Beyond their regular seasonal performances, the Smuin Ballet dancers engage in a wide range of special projects, including appearing in three films: A Walk in the Clouds, The Fantasticks and George Lucas' 1996 Return of the Jedi, Special Edition.
