The first revival of one of Smuin's classics was great classical with a touch of whimsy, and petit mort was stunning. The last section left a little wanting though, but I'll always be a fan :)Written on May 28 2010

Really enjoyed every aspect of this performance. It was far more physical, fast-paced than I thought it would be. The choreography and music made the experience along with the superb strength and agility of the dancers. Don't miss it.Written on May 26 2010

Description
Smuin Ballet concludes its 2009/2010 season with an invigorating spring program consisting of three enthralling, high-energy ballets—visual stunner Petite Mort, passionate Songs of Mahler, and the striking French Twist.
European choreographer Jirí Kylián’s breathtaking Petite Mort, which pairs six men and six women with six fencing foils, set to two of Mozart’s most beautiful piano concertos, marks a significant collaboration for Smuin Ballet. Petite Mort encompasses Kylian’s trademark grace and inventiveness in a roundelay in which aggression, sexuality, vulnerability, tenderness, and harmony all play a part. Smuin Ballet will be the first Bay Area company to perform this jewel by Kylián, one of the most inventive and daring choreographers at work today and for many years the driving force behind Nederlands Dans Theater. Continuing the program is Michael Smuin’s Songs of Mahler, a vivid ballet that flows through a range of emotions from playful to dramatic and passionate. Rounding out what will be a remarkable program is rising star choreographer Ma Cong’s fast and flirtatious piece French Twist set to five musical selections by French composer Hugues Le Bars. Currently a principal dancer at Tulsa Ballet, Cong was named one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to Watch” in 2006 and created French Twist at the National Choreographers Initiative in the summer of 2008.
