Don't miss your chance to see the latest and greatest new work from the Bay Area's hottest up-and-coming playwrights at the 16th annual Best of PlayGround Festival. Each performance of the show, starring and directed by top local talent, features seven short plays in their entirety -- and this year, they've even included two 10-minute musicals as part of the mix. In all, 36 plays were developed as part of the Monday night staged-reading series at Berkeley Rep, and these seven were specially selected to be part of this festival. Stick around after the Sunday night performances for a discussion with the playwrights. VIP tickets include prime priority seating, a glass of wine and a meet-and-greet with the playwrights at intermission. Please see the event description for more information on the lineup. Learn More

Really don't like giving such a low review but was not impressed with either the story line or the set at all. There was pretty much no plot or point that I could make out additionally the room reeked of polyurethane or something so bad my throat was killing me by the end of the show. I'd be willing to check out another play/show at this venue because it was a nice building overall but hopefully the ventilation system or time will take care of the smell.Written on Mar 05 2012

Acting was excellent as were the staging, lighting and choreography for the dance sequences. However as a play about the playwright's obsessive thoughts about racial issues and her place in that conversation, it was choppy and verged on self indulgent. If I don't understand or connect with the metaphors an author is embodying it's hard to get interested in how they play out.Written on Apr 09 2011

Was not worth the time. A waste of actors time. The story went way over or under my head. I believe the actors were doing their best. Racism is a reality of life and should be understood. This play didn't even ask a good question. My wife is still "shell shocked".Written on Apr 01 2011

Description
A satirical play by the scathingly funny, award-winning Young Jean Lee, Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven takes the audience on a shockingly funny dissection of race. Obliterating conventions of Asian stereotypes through its violent and explosive theatricality, Songs follows four Korean women on a wild journey—sometimes hilarious, often times squirm-inducing. A Tarantino-esque collage of dance, monologues, scenes, and violence hilariously flood the stage where nothing is sacred, but everything is incisive and intelligent.
Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven cast members include Katie Chan, Lily Tung Crystal*, Cindy Im, Alexis Papedo, Josh Schell, and Mimu Tsujimura. (*Denotes member of Actors’ Equity Association.)
