Named one of the top ten plays of 2009 by The Advocate, Daniel Talbott's Slipping is an emotional drama about Eli, a high-school senior, who moves with his mother from California to Iowa after his dad's death. But after being mistreated by his closeted ex in California, Eli struggles with the idea of starting a new relationship with the straight star athlete who's befriended him and now wants to get even closer. New Conservatory Theatre Center is known for its innovative productions centered on theatrical work for youth and the LGBT community, and continues that mission with this show, directed by Andrew Nance. It's a cute and funny take on a small North Carolina Theatre's production of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. Jim takes over directing the show while in between jobs and meets up with a hysterical and varied group of community theatre actors. It rather reminded me somewhat of Greater Tuna with all the different characters. It has some very funny moments and was a nice way to spend 80 minutes. Jim Davis is very engaging as he was at Monday's Benefit.Written on Aug 20 2009

I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end by Jim David. His script is tight and his delivery charming and funny. His portrayal of at least 10 characters is first rate. What I found particularly attractive was that even in this autobiographical story, Jim does not wallow in the annoying overly introspective me-me-me-ness that is par for the solo performance course. It's a tale of wacky characters and the character of Jim is proportionally small. Bottom line: Loved it! Highly recommended. Another great value from Goldstar. P.S. The New Conservatory Theater is lovely.Written on Aug 14 2009

I laughed so hard that my belt buckle broke! Jim has a way of expertly circling back to situations and character nuances that are set up throughout the story, so he had us roaring nearly the whole time. What was best is that he developed many of the characters with a real human side (the misunderstood geeky teenager, the Slovenian immigrant who janitors at the theater so he can feed his family). The result is a well rounded STORY, not just a selection of one-liners that are strung together. The audience spontaneously applauded at every pause between scenes, and my friends and I were recalling one funny line after another the rest of the evening. I emailed all of my friends telling them not to miss this production before it ends. See it!Written on Aug 18 2009
