Tony-winning Broadway star Judy Kaye stars in Souvenir at the American Conservatory Theater. Kaye earned a Tony nomination for her role in this hilarious and touching show, based on the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York socialite and tone-deaf diva whose famously incompetent performances led her to cult figure status. Donald Corren plays her wry accompanist.

Simon and Janine are sent on an unexpected journey to the war-torn Middle East after their mother, who for years had remained silent, leaves them post-mortem letters with clues to the family's mysterious past. Their quest to unravel their origins leads them in search of a father and brother whose existence was previously unknown to them. Adapted into the Oscar-nominated film, Incendies, and translated into a dozen languages in over 100 productions worldwide, Scorched makes its West Coast debut at American Conservatory Theatre. The A.C.T. production features David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) as bumbling notary public Alphonse Lebel, who acts as a guide to the two twins in their search. Learn More

This was a charming show. I had reservations going in and all during the performance I kept thinking, "This is going to get old really fast.", but it didn't. Judy Kaye was as wonderful as always and Donald Corren was touching and entertaining. I would highly recommend this show.

Funny and charming, a good night out. Our Goldstar seats were fantastic! We even got a free discussion with the playwright beforehand!

This is a one trick pony of a show that is fully played out after 20 minutes. I could hardly wait for the intermission and the opportunity to make better use of my time.

Great show - excellent performances, well-staged, fascinating story - and true, to boot.
Our orchestra seats were on the side but just fine for this show. Goldstar is such a deal!

Description

The remarkable Judy Kaye (Sweeney Todd) returns to A.C.T. in the outrageous Broadway role that earned her a Tony Award nomination. A fresh, original adventure, Souvenir imagines the story of real-life Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York socialite and tone-deaf diva who thought she was a great soprano. Broadway's brilliant Donald Corren plays her wry accompanist, who chronicles Florence's unlikely rise to cult status, culminating in an infamous sold-out Carnegie Hall performance. A heartfelt, wickedly funny look at the limits of self-perception and the unpredictable nature of friendship.
