San Francisco's annual Bay to Breakers footrace is as famed as its host city for its fun and flamboyant party atmosphere. But writer-performer Heather Marlowe instead endured a horrific experience, as she was drugged and raped at the event. This sharp-witted autobiographical play delves into the aftermath of the assault and the absurdity of the systems set up to deal with that specific crime, even in a supposedly enlightened city like Frisco. The show's director, Berkeley Rep regular Jean-Michele Gregory calls the story "daring and astonishing -- and frequently funny, because part of Marlowe's gift is her ability to find the absurd and the beautiful in the midst of the banal and the horrible." Cameron Galloway's piece was wonderful and inspiring. This is my favorite work of her's since her time in the comedy improv group, Thundering Herd in the '90s. I hope this strong current work gives her well-earned personal confidence and abolishes all of her fears.
Amanda Ortmayer did an excellent job with the other character's monologues.
