A.C.T. Performs Endgame and Play - A Beckett Double Bill

Full Price:
$20.00 - $95.00
Our Price:
$10.00 - $57.00

American Conservatory Theater performs a double bill of two outstanding plays from master playwright Samuel Beckett. Endgame and Play are a pair of absurd dark comedies that conjure a fiercely funny and emotionally gripping world. In Endgame, Tony Award winner Bill Irwin takes on the role of Hamm, who is trapped between life and death with his young servant, Clov. Together they engage in a chess match of wits in this vivid exploration of the end of life. This iconic work will be presented together with Beckett's rarely performed one-act Play, a brief comic tour de force about marriage and infidelity, featuring members of A.C.T.'s core acting company. I realized that I don't like musical theatre. Too cliche for me.

I am in two minds about this sensational production.

One: Sweeney Todd is a macabre, black comedy/drama, so perverse in it's content that it horrifies and sickens me to give it the praise it deserves, because. . .

Two: this new version happens to be a brilliant and impeccable show, from an artistic standpoint, probably one of the most amazing showcases of theatrical talent and hard work in recent history, a masterpiece of precision and ensemble performing. It just works.

Luckily, the composer and writer, Sondheim and Wheeler, have at least made a legitimate moral comment on the consequences of "revenge" and many other corrupted behaviors depicted here. It's a horror story, so expect it to be grim. . .with a touch of chilling humor as an accent.

Not all works of art are "pretty." This is indeed a work of art. . . Not pretty. But pretty incredible.

Expect the unexpected. Not as 'gran guignol' as the Cariou/Lansbury effort. Keep your eye on the guy who plays "Toby"... he steals the show!

I really enjoyed the staging and the overall performance by the multi-talented cast of Sweeney Todd. The only issue I had was that it appeared that the actors were slightly under-mic'd. As we sat in the First Balcony area, it was difficult to hear them at times.

Description

The hit Broadway revival of Sondheim's musical thriller arrives at A.C.T.. In this visionary and reimagined production of Sweeney Todd, the legendary demon barber of Fleet Street still serves up his justice vigilante-style, but director John Doyle has created an edgier, stripped-down staging of Sondheim's masterpiece complete with a multitalented cast of actors playing all the instruments onstage. The intimate result delivers wicked pleasure in a chilling evening of theater that "burrows into your thoughts with a poisoned seductiveness" (New York Times). With its naughty humor and infectious melodies, Sweeney Todd knows how to show you a bloody good time!
