Simon and Janine are sent on an unexpected journey to the war-torn Middle East after their mother, who for years had remained silent, leaves them post-mortem letters with clues to the family's mysterious past. Their quest to unravel their origins leads them in search of a father and brother whose existence was previously unknown to them. Adapted into the Oscar-nominated film, Incendies, and translated into a dozen languages in over 100 productions worldwide, Scorched makes its West Coast debut at American Conservatory Theatre. The A.C.T. production features David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) as bumbling notary public Alphonse Lebel, who acts as a guide to the two twins in their search. Learn More

I realized that I don't like musical theatre. Too cliche for me.Written on Oct 10 2007

I am in two minds about this sensational production.Written on Oct 08 2007
One: Sweeney Todd is a macabre, black comedy/drama, so perverse in it's content that it horrifies and sickens me to give it the praise it deserves, because. . .
Two: this new version happens to be a brilliant and impeccable show, from an artistic standpoint, probably one of the most amazing showcases of theatrical talent and hard work in recent history, a masterpiece of precision and ensemble performing. It just works.
Luckily, the composer and writer, Sondheim and Wheeler, have at least made a legitimate moral comment on the consequences of "revenge" and many other corrupted behaviors depicted here. It's a horror story, so expect it to be grim. . .with a touch of chilling humor as an accent.
Not all works of art are "pretty." This is indeed a work of art. . . Not pretty. But pretty incredible.

I really enjoyed the staging and the overall performance by the multi-talented cast of Sweeney Todd. The only issue I had was that it appeared that the actors were slightly under-mic'd. As we sat in the First Balcony area, it was difficult to hear them at times.Written on Oct 03 2007

This was a very impressive production! We were delighted with the way the cast not only acted and sang, but that they also played the part of the orchestra. Excellent staging and a really wonderful sense of the material. We had a fantastic time.Written on Nov 19 2007

Description
The hit Broadway revival of Sondheim's musical thriller arrives at A.C.T.. In this visionary and reimagined production of Sweeney Todd, the legendary demon barber of Fleet Street still serves up his justice vigilante-style, but director John Doyle has created an edgier, stripped-down staging of Sondheim's masterpiece complete with a multitalented cast of actors playing all the instruments onstage. The intimate result delivers wicked pleasure in a chilling evening of theater that "burrows into your thoughts with a poisoned seductiveness" (New York Times). With its naughty humor and infectious melodies, Sweeney Todd knows how to show you a bloody good time!
Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Hugh Wheeler
Directed and designed by John Doyle
