The Geffen Playhouse presents the story of Molly Ivins, the outspoken sharp-witted Texas reporter whose liberal journalism brought her national fame and a job at The New York Times, where she wrote Elvis Presley's obituary. Two-time Tony and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner plays the fiery redhead, a self-proclaimed "pain in the ass to whatever powers come to be." Though The New York Times had hired Ivins to bring life to its staid writing style, her political edginess and controversial social commentary eventually proved to be too much, and Ivins moved on to Texas papers that embraced her sharp-tongued humor. This acclaimed show captures Ivins' unique character using personal anecdotes and her colorful take on national politics. Learn More

It's a lovely play focusing on the life of Emily Dickinson and told through her poetry. Having seen the Belle of Amherst that showed and older Emily, I was happy to see something on her early life. The enthusiastic cast does a good job telling the story though I had no idea who one of the characters was or why she was there. She was more of a storyteller, I assume.Written on May 15 2010

This is a wonderful, magical production. I think the best way to describe it is to say that even if you are intimately familiar with Dickinson's work this play will make the poems and the poet even more alive to you.Written on May 10 2010
The production offers the viewer a glimpse at a kind of understanding that goes beyond close reading, beyond biography. The words intertwine with vivid drama and unison, build into melodies, and are sometimes spoken, sometimes yelled, and always felt.
The play is visually poignant as well, and makes beautiful use of simple props.
The music is beautiful and perfectly tailored to the production. I could write an entire glowing review of just the music.
The cast did an amazing job. I was particularly impressed by their strength and versatility.

Description
Tell It Slant portrays the little-known story of Emily Dickinson as a young woman, tracing an emotionally volatile love triangle involving Emily, her brother Austin, and their intimate friend Susan Gilbert. Calling herself “a boy,” Emily bands together with her older brother Austin against the authority of their parents and the oppressive evangelism of the 1840s.
Set in the Dickinson family’s Amherst, Massachusetts home and environs, the play follows Emily through her formative years. Inwardly rebellious, but outwardly obedient, she continually finds herself at odds with the social expectations of the time.
As Emily tries to define herself in a world that has few options for women, she experiences uncertainty and finally a betrayal that plunges her into deep despair. The play explores Emily’s deep feelings for her friend Susan which go beyond the social norms of friendship and lead to her discovery of her remarkable poetic voice. For Dickinson, the process of creation is playful, curious, rebellious, dangerous, unexpected, and finally redemptive.
The original production was directed by Rachel Anderson, and the San Francisco remount is directed by Virginia Reed. Working together in this unusual ensemble piece, the actors appear on stage throughout the play and portray multiple roles. Dickinson's poetry is interwoven in the script both as original songs by Joan McMillen, and as scenes devised by the chorus of actors. The production features Caitlyn Louchard as Emily Dickinson, Siobhan Doherty as Susan Gilbert, Todd Brotze as Austin Dickinson, and the ensemble of Nick Allen, Bear Capron, Paz Pardo, Michael Sommers, and Juliet Strong playing multiple roles.
