From a bustling downtown arts hub to a home for Southeast Asian refugees and then to its current reputation as the "underbelly of the city," known for its problems with homelessness, illegal drugs, prostitution and violent crime -- along with its hardworking social-service community -- San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood is filled with fascinating characters and stories. It's also home to the well-regarded experimental-theater company Cutting Ball, which commissioned writer/director Annie Elias to create a documentary theater piece about this historic area. Seven of their actors then set out to interview a wide variety of residents, and those transcripts were shaped into this powerful multi-character piece, now receiving its world premiere.

Tenderloin is a wonderful love poem to a neighborhood I shunned. Every voice was real because it reflects what the writers and actors heard on the street. The play is very convincing, moving and enjoyable and deserves a prize from the Bay Area Theater Critics.

Beautifully compiled and written, this piece was an engaging, constantly entertaining look at the complexity and depth of soul of the Tenderloin. The cacaphony of the set design punctuated the theme of the play, the discarded, old, disheveled, yet purposeful, beautiful, and functional at the same time. The actors transformed before our eyes from nervous sketchy corner punk to school children to attorneys to fresh-faced high school seniors. A pleasure start to finish

Quotes & Highlights

  • “… a raw and often riveting evening of documentary theater … there’s something particularly potent about a company [Cutting Ball] based in the Tenderloin, going into the streets to interview its neighbors … What finally emerges is surprisingly hopeful.” —SF Examiner
  • “[Tenderloin is] a compelling and compassionate piece of documentary theater in the best tradition of Tectonic Theater Project and Anna Deavere Smith. You walk out of the theater with a fresh perspective, not just on the Tenderloin but on the wider world.” —Theater Dogs
