Set during the rural economic slowdown of the 1970s, playwright Sam Shepard's universally acclaimed Buried Child resonates as strongly today as it did when it launched Shepard's career in 1978. A Pulitzer winner for drama, Buried Child makes for a fierce, forceful and unforgettable portrayal of the realities of the American Dream. The realistic masterpiece mixes comedy and drama, keen commentary and deep emotion in a squalid farm home occupied by a clan filled with suppressed violence, apparent unhappiness and dark secrets. Kenneth Kelleher directs this San Jose Stage Company production. Learn More

This is a really great play that is definitely worth seeing. It's unique in a way that it combines elements of philosophical theories on religion and existence of God, dilemma of life and death, tragedy of losing a loved one with elements of “creepy” yet lighthearted and sometimes dorky comedy. I would think that combining these different elements into one smooth flowing and whole play is a huge undertaking that requires the great directing and skilled and talented cast. Virago theatre did an outstanding job in accomplishing that. Thank you for a great, satisfying and fun experience.Written on Nov 14 2009

Can Lydia find a body for Harry's brain? Can she use her body to get Todd to donate his body? Is there such thing as sex without a body? For answers to these and other pressing questions about neuroscience, metaphysics and the search for the perfect mate see The Afterlife of the Mind, the hilarious and shocking world premiere by William Bivins. The most talked about reading of the 2008 Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Alaska.
Lydia's husband, famous philosopher Harry Pengrove, is dying of a rare illness. Unwilling to accept his fate, Lydia enlists the help of Ulrich Hoffsteadler, a brilliant but illegal neurosurgeon who operates out of the back of a bar and who, medical legend has it, once transplanted a human brain. After a botched transplant, Lydia embarks on a journey pushing the limits of love, the human body and medical science to save Harry's extraordinary mind.
