The Jewish Community Center of San Francisco welcomes journalist Hirsch Goodman. Born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Goodman immigrated to Israel in 1965 and since 1971 has been a journalist there, founding and serving as editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Report. The perennial question, "Can Israel survive?" has become a dangerous distraction, Goodman says. He argues that the country's obsession with dangers posed by outside forces has obscured the thornier issues facing it from within. Now Israel's survival is menaced more by the incompetence of its leaders and fissures in its social and political system than by threats from other nations.

Description

Hirsh Goodman was born in Apartheid-era South Africa, where as a child he and his friends marched off to Zionist Socialist meetings, full of rhetoric about equality, justice, and democracy — all within the context of Israel. Increasingly unwilling to tolerate the racism and anti-Semitism of his home, Goodman immigrated to Israel in his teenage years.
