The Washington Stage Guild presents Husbands and Lovers, from Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnar, author of such Stage Guild hits as The Guardsman, The Play's The Thing, and A Tale of The Wolf. With witty dialogue reminiscent of Oscar Wilde, Molnar presents comic scenes illustrating the many ways men and women can drive each other crazy. Molnar's wicked blend of realism and romanticism, cynicism and sentimentality perfectly captures the feelings inspired by romantic relationships. Learn More

I enjoyed this play. The first half was much more fun and lively than the second half. Some of the acting could have been stronger. Also, a few of the actors needed to project better. The band was louder than a few of them. The band was amazing and I would love to go just to see them perform. Contrary to another reviewer, we all loved the vocalist. She was smooth, jazzy, and she fit well with the musicians. Overall, a well done production with some campy moments and performances.Written on Mar 08 2010

We loved this production! The only wee criticisms we had were the over-use of scrims to create room separations and separations from the band. We thought it unnecessary and too "busy" in many instances.Written on Mar 01 2010
Speaking of the band, lose the so-called "singer"! She sat there looking stoned (was she?) most of the time and most of her singing was flat and uninspired. My friend, who has a lovely singing voice, was actually prompted to sing along softly with the correct words and pitch to the songs to try and counter the terrible job the singer was doing! Perhaps that was all done deliberatly to point out just how desperate the gals and guys of that period, myself included, were for entertainment that we would accept so little in talent just for a place to gather together? In any case, it was trying to the ears!
The acting itself by all characters was first-rate in every sense of the word and I think they got down the sterotypes under which we acted our roles of butch and femme pretty well. Not so many shades of gray and definately no rainbow flavors around then!

I'm a fan of the source material so I really wanted to like this. The direction was inept the acting was horrible. There was no sense of the period or style, the music was anachronistic. Some or all of this might be forgiven—but their worst crime was making this sexy story- preachy, bloodless and boring.Written on Mar 15 2010
It was an amateur production for which they were charging professional prices (thankfully we paid Goldstar prices)

I went to see this play on the second night they performed and there were still a few rough spots and awkward silences when actors took too long to remember their lines.Written on Mar 15 2010
I had to get over my disappointment that the woman cast as Beebo didn't match the image I've had in my mind all these years, but once I recovered, all the actors were quite believable as those familiar characters.
The condensation of the book to play form was just OK in my opinion
The theater is close to 24th/Mission BART and very close to Roosevelt Tamale...best Mexican food in the Mission

Description
Adapted from Ann Bannon's groundbreaking, award-winning pulp novels of the 1950s and 1960s, Beebo Brinker Chronicles follows the lives and loves of four friends in pre-Stonewall Greenwich Village. Beth and Laura, secret lovers in college, still pine for each other. Before they can reunite, they find themselves entangled in a web spun by Beebo Brinker, a butch denizen of the underground bar scene, and Jack, a flamboyant fop with caustic wit.
