I fell asleep. It was too dense for me, not theatrical.

I was rather skeptical when NCTC decided to do TAKE ME OUT a season or so back. They surprised me by doing a very good small production of the Tony Award winner. I was skeptical again when they announced they were doing THE HISTORY BOYS, another Tony Award winner but they... Read More’ve done another excellent job with this play. Richard Ryan and Michaela Greeley lead a fairly strong cast. I felt differently about the play this time from when I saw it on Broadway and I think that is due to Ed Decker’s direction which keeps the play running at a steady, upbeat pace. I felt rather depressed and sad walking out of the Broadhurst theatre in New York, thinking why all the bad stuff happens to the gay characters. This time, I didn’t feel that way. What happens to Hector and Irwin came across as just an accident and Posner simply comes across as the only one that doesn’t conform isn’t conventional. It wasn’t sad or depressing at all.

Ed Decker has provided San Francisco an impressive production of this incredible play by Alan Bennett. After sucessful runs in London and Broadway followed by a movie, this story of young men dealing with the challenges of a private school, instructors and sexuality is well acted by local talent. The production values and direction are superb and create the mood that is vital to the sensitive themes. Richard Ryan (Hector), James Breedlove Dakin), Janathan Shue (Scripps) snd Ryan Foster (Posnerr) deserve special credit for their peroformances, but all the acting, with one exception, is excellent. Also, kudos to the set scenic and light designers for making the staging enchance the story! This is definitely another jewel in the crown of Ed Decker and NCTC.

Description

The History Boys
by Alan Bennett
Directed by Ed Decker
Execultive Producer: Theodore Neff
Associate Producers: Norm Abramson, David Beery
A delightfully witty comedy of eight boisterous - yet talented - school boys hoping to gain admittance to England’s most prestigious universities. This Tony Award-Winner (Best Play, 2006) is a wickedly funny look at history, the pursuit of knowledge, and the utter randomness of life.
