First timer with this type of event. Interesting is the term I'd use. The throat singing was good, but got old quickly. The dances and costumes were great. So I'd say it was a good event, but just not my taste.
It was wonderful to see and HEAR the sights and sounds of one of the oldest religions in the world.
However, the presentation is more along the lines of a cultural enlightenment, as opposed to theatrical "entertainment", which tends to be carefully choreographed to achieve the maximum effect on an audience. The many short "performance" pieces presented during the evening involved chants, invocations, dances and blessings, all rituals which undoubtedly lose some of their spiritual significant when extracted from their settings. I found myself more receptive to the powerful, spiritual resonance of the music when I simply closed my eyes.
The evening ended on a very sobering note, as the master of ceremonies outlined the purpose of the traveling show, and that is to essentially relay to as many people as possible that this significant culture and form of Buddhism are in danger of being altered, restrained and diluted because of the rigorous and protracted supression by the Chinese government.
For that renewed awareness alone, I am glad I attended this.
One of the kind event! By no means the music, multiphonic singing, or traditional debates got old at any point of the night. It was as if we were traveling to Tibet ourselves. It was breathtaking! And our 2 year old daughter particularly likes Snow Lion. Great night overall.

The Herbst is small by most performing-arts standards (only 928 seats). So despite its stately appearance, it provides a refreshingly intimate atmosphere.

Tibetan temple music is particularly renowned in the west for its two forms of multiphonic singing known as jok-kay (low tone) and bar-da (high tone). In both forms, each of the main chantmasters simultaneously intones three notes, thus each individually creating a complete chord. The Tibetans are the only culture on earth that cultivate this most extraordinary vocal ability. This tradition is also known as "overtone singing" because it is accomplished by means of learning to control the muscles of the vocal cavity and then re-shaping it while singing, thus intensifying the natural overtones of the voice. In effect, the body is transformed into an effective overtone amplifier.
