New Century Chamber Orchestra, the 19-piece string ensemble under the musical direction of famed violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, celebrates the opening of its 20th Anniversary season by welcoming back its first musical director and concertmaster, award-winning Stuart Canin, as a soloist on Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in D Minor. The concert also features Bloch's Concerto Grosso No 1, and closes with Shchedrin's interpretation of Bizet's opera Carmen. Salerno-Sonnenberg first came to national fame in 2000 as the subject of the Academy Award-nominated film Speaking in Strings, and has since appeared on 60 Minutes, The Toinght Show, Live from Lincoln Center and The Charlie Rose Show, among others. The New Century orchestra has released six CDs, including its latest -- Live: Barber, Strauss, Mahler -- in 2010.

Stuart Canin, the New Century Chamber Orchestra's beloved first Music Director and Concertmaster, returns as a soloist in the 20th Anniversary Season opening performances.

From the beginning, Mr. Canin set such a high musical standard that New Century immediately won the respect of audiences, musicians, and critics. During his tenure, the Orchestra released three recordings, one of which garnered a Grammy-nomination: Written with the Heart's Blood, featuring the music of Dmitri Shostakovich.

A former Concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera, Mr. Canin most recently served as Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Opera under Music Director James Conlon and General Director Placido Domingo. He has been honored as the first prize winner of the Paganini International Violin Competition and recipient of the Handel Medal, New York City's highest cultural award.
