American Conservatory Theater presents the 2011 Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of The Normal Heart, directed by Tony winner George C. Wolfe (Angels in America). Fueled by love, anger, hope and pride, a circle of friends struggle to contain the mysterious disease ravaging New York's gay community. Dismissed by politicians, frustrated by doctors and fighting with each other, their differences could tear them apart -- or change the world. Playwright Larry Kramer's (Academy Award-nominee, Women in Love) masterwork is an outrageous and unforgettable look at sexual politics during the AIDS crisis and remains one of theater's most powerful pieces. Broadway cast member Patrick Breen (The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie) reprises his role alongside a talented cast of stage and screen veterans including Bruce Altman, Jordan Baker and Tom Berklund.

I know this play well even owning a copy of the script, dog eared from frequent reading. The history of the show is outstanding and well drawn. The connections made to issues like fighting for marriage equality and health care as a right not a privilege to name a few, show how relevant this story still is today. Truly an inspiring ensemble cast piece that didn't disappoint. Matt McGrath as Felix Turner was excellent first drawing me in to care about Felix then tearing my heart out. Sean Dugan as Tommy Boatright shined delivering with flawless precision several memorable lines and moments with a perfect balance of comic and dramatic timing. Jordan Baker delivered as Dr. Emma Brookner a huge range of theatrical motion from a character bound by her circumstances and her paralysis. I did have some issues with the set and staging. The white on white statistical backdrop were to my taste a bit too subtle, hard to read, and not quite in your face enough to bolster the shows message. The blocking at times seemed two dimensional with a lot of walking from left to right and back again lacking textual motivation that I found distracting.

All that said it is a very good production that could still use some directorial tweaking but is a worth while evenings entertainment; both thought provoking and sincere. Go see it.

First rate acting in this production. One of the better productions i have seen at ACT. Several of the monlogues were gut-wrenching. Powerful play that brings back the history of this horrid plague. Dramatic but with some ironic comedy every so often.

Wow. What a powerhouse. The intensity I've come to expect from ACT. The set was metaphorically amazing. The play was hard hitting. And the acting was captivating. I not only cried during the last part of the play, I cried all the way down the road afterwards. Kudos.
