A fabulous performance with strong vocals, energetic acting, and striking sets. It was everything a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta should be. The Novellus Theater at YBCA is a modern smaller version of the SF Opera House. Because we had half-price Goldstar tickets we were in the rear of the balcony. But the theater design with its well-banked rows and fine acoustics made for excellent seats. For parking there is a $7 flat evening rate after 5PM at the Moscone Parking Garage a block away on 3rd St between Howard and Folsom.Written on Aug 20 2010

Absolutely charming. Every detail carefully produced. Mix of professionals and talented non professionals lends to a sense of homeyness but never for a minute was the performance less than top knotch. BRAVO Lamplighters!Written on Aug 20 2010

Description
Lamplighters Music Theatre opens its 58th season with Gilbert & Sullivan’s swashbuckling musical comedy The Pirates of Penzance. Wacky, irreverent, and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates Of Penzance follows the story of an orphan boy who was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate instead of a pilot. A hilarious farce featuring sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dewy-eyed daughters, and an eccentric Major General, and peppered with unforgettable melodies and tongue-twisting songs such as "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" and "Poor Wandering One," Pirates is one of the most popular operettas ever written.
