An interesting and very enjoyable play. The actors were spot on. It was well worth the trip downtown. I had thought, "If it's awful, we can always leave and hit a movie." The thought never occurred to me once the lights dimmed. Go see it, quick, before it's gone!

A very well written play with a very strong cast. Eric Reid as Epsilon was the perfect master manipulator bringing a wonderful sexual menace to his interactions with the other characters. Jessica Cortese was able to make the most of her portrayal of what could have been a one note Mrs. Radcliffe in less talented hands. Evan Winchester's Baylian was over the top and creepy and simply terrific. The music, particularly in the first act, really helped to establish the mood of the play.

I have to say I was not thrilled by this show as many others seemed to be. Interesting concept yet I thought the cast was uneven. The actor that played Epsilon by far was the stand out and gets 4 stars. The "funny" guy was also a hoot and provided needed comic relief and quirkiness. I agree with one other reviewer that parts did seem to drag. The audience I saw the show with seemed to really enjoy this. However, I left feeling indifferent about the show and not "wowed".

  • "Inspired, rebellious lovemaking with our doom-clouded moment, realized by an engrossing cast unerringly directed by PianoFight's Christy Crowley." --SF Bay Guardian

Description

SF-based production company PianoFight kicks off the new decade with its first-ever full-length dramatic play, The Position, a world-premiere written by the most produced local playwright of the current Bay Area season, William Bivins.

In June 2009, William Bivins' short play "Grunion Run" was judged by audiences to be the best of PianoFight's annual play writing competition ShortLived 2.0. Bivins prize was a commission to pen a world premiere full-length play — his challenge was to do it in less than six months. Having never written a true ensemble piece, Bivins got to work and turned out The Position by Christmas Eve, three days shy of his deadline.

So exactly what is The Position? It’s not just a job; in a world ravaged by 80% unemployment and mass social chaos, The Position represents security and fulfillment. The Concern has selected six finalists from more than half-a-million job applicants, flown them to a remote compound, and provided them with every luxury and diversion, including golf, paragliding and skeet shooting. When they arrive, the six candidates are stripped of their clothing and identities, informed that the laws of The Nation have been suspended and that they will be recorded around the clock while they compete for the one job that they believe can give them hope in a hopeless world.

The Concern, formerly known as “The Last Conglomerate,” was formed when the remaining 159 companies in the Fortune 500 merged to provide The Nation with laws, a private security force, currency and products to meet basic human needs.

Featuring Kate Jones, Asher Lyons, Gabrielle Patacsil, Eric Reid, Dan Williams and Laura Zimmerman as the six finalists, The Position cast is rounded out by Jessica Cortese and Evan Winchester as employees of The Concern who administer the application process. Anne Jones handles design, Logan Andrews runs the technical side, while Gabi Patacsil, Dan Williams and Rob Ready produce.
