Simon and Janine are sent on an unexpected journey to the war-torn Middle East after their mother, who for years had remained silent, leaves them post-mortem letters with clues to the family's mysterious past. Their quest to unravel their origins leads them in search of a father and brother whose existence was previously unknown to them. Adapted into the Oscar-nominated film, Incendies, and translated into a dozen languages in over 100 productions worldwide, Scorched makes its West Coast debut at American Conservatory Theatre. The A.C.T. production features David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) as bumbling notary public Alphonse Lebel, who acts as a guide to the two twins in their search. Learn More

A still poignant story even though it was written a couple of generations ago. The central character may seem to be Starbucks but he is only the facilitator who brings out all the emotions in the family he elopes into. It is important to view the characters not in present terms but try to see and feel them as they were written over half a century ago. I applaude the entire cast for their strong, balanced and thoughtful rendition of this story. To really enjoy this play - see it from the father's POV - and his relationship with his sons, daughter, rainmaker and the law.

The first act was a bit slow toward the end but the second and third acts picked it up.

A great show! The play really captured your attention. The only downside is that the volume could be tuned up a bit more.

Description

A classic American romance, The Rainmaker is a refreshingly heartfelt fable about a con man, a country girl, and the way that love can overcome cynicism in even the most tired of souls. The Rainmaker centers on the charismatic huckster Starbuck, who travels the heartland selling snake-oil and other dubious miracle cures. At the drought-stricken Curry farm, Starbuck promises to make it rain--for a price, of course. But when he and Lizzie, the lone daughter of the family, discover a genuine chemistry, they begin to consider the possibility of a real miracle.

By N. Richard Nash
