Set during the rural economic slowdown of the 1970s, playwright Sam Shepard's universally acclaimed Buried Child resonates as strongly today as it did when it launched Shepard's career in 1978. A Pulitzer winner for drama, Buried Child makes for a fierce, forceful and unforgettable portrayal of the realities of the American Dream. The realistic masterpiece mixes comedy and drama, keen commentary and deep emotion in a squalid farm home occupied by a clan filled with suppressed violence, apparent unhappiness and dark secrets. Kenneth Kelleher directs this San Jose Stage Company production. Learn More

Really terrific performances all around! Very clever staging at times too. Not a huge fan of the movie version at all but these folks are stars! some miking issues that I'm sure they'll resolve. Opening night standing ovations are pretty awesome though.Written on Oct 20 2008

Great costumes and set. Dr. Frank N Furter was excellent. Issues with the sound and balance were occasionally distracting.Written on Oct 20 2008

frank n. furter left something to be desired, but other than that the show was amesome. mother f**king awesome! the theater is beautiful. the cast fabulous. i wish they had put a bit more effort into getting people to partisipate in the "time warp", but they made up for that at the end giving us a "time warp for the road". i totally suggest attending, don't forget to your lingerie and feather boas.Written on Oct 21 2008

I REALLY enjoyed this event much more than I thought I would. It was a ton of fun and the cast was very talented. Most of them could sing very well. I was impressed. I do agree with others though that the sound system was not the best. It WAS hard to understand what they were singing or saying quite frequently. Maybe next time they will be in a better venue or have a better sound system. Thanks for the fun!Written on Nov 10 2008

Description
Ray of Light Theatre is proud to present Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show. This is the original musical that spawned the longest-running film of all time. It's a fully staged rock show with a live band, scenery, lighting and special effects...and it all takes place in the perfect venue: The Victoria Theatre at Mission and 16th.
The Rocky Horror Show stars the multi-talented Jef Valentine as Dr. Frank N Furter and features San Francisco stage veterans Rebecca Pingree, Jason Hoover, Sarah Kathleen Farrell, Manuel Caneri, Jessica Coker and Leanne Borghesi. It is directed and choreographed by Los Angeles-based Cate Caplin, with musical direction and original arrangements by Ben Prince.

The Rocky Horror Show originally debuted in 1973 on a small experimental stage in London. A live parody of the classic sci-fi and monster movies of the 40s and 50s, it was the brainchild of actor Richard O'Brien and director Jim Sharman. It starred Tim Curry and with catchy rock music, larger-than-life characters and a bewildering plot, it was immensely popular with audiences and won the award for Best Musical of 1973 from The London Evening Standard.

In 1974, the show came to America, opening at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, where it played for nine months to full houses. Tim Curry reprised his role, but many new faces joined the cast, including the rock musician Michael Lee Aday, a.k.a. Meatloaf. The production caught the attention of 20th Century Fox, who acquired the rights and set out to make it into a motion picture,

In 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show opened in the United States. In the roles of Brad and Janet, it featured relative unknowns Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon. It received mixed reviews initially, but promoters quickly realized the film was attracting a cult following. They began to hold discount midnight screenings, which turned out to be very good idea. Audience members were returning time after time and, having memorized the film, were shouting alternate lines and dancing "The Time Warp" in the aisles. Soon "shadow casts" developed, who wore elaborate costumes and pantomimed every scene in the film on the stage in front of the screen. Now, more than 30 years later, it is still the quintessential cult film, with a huge international following, yearly conventions and midnight showings in many major cities, including San Francisco.

Now, Ray of Light Theatre is proud to present Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show, the original stage version that started it all. They're going back to its roots, taking their inspiration from the original stage casts, and bringing it to life with live music, choreography, costumes, sets and some of San Francisco's top vocalists.
