LOVED LOVED LOVED this! Very thought provoking and moving. A small theatre, and it was warm inside, but the time flew by as it was so enjoyable. Well acted by all!

While the actors and actress were good, the story line seemed disjointed. There was minimal connection between the two parts of the play except for the historical timing and the character of Will.

It took a while to realize that the play alternates between earlier and later in the same evening, a neat conceit that makes you go back and re-evaluate what you thought before… which is kind of what the whole play is about: re-evaluating a pivotal point in history. Because the time moves back and forth, both story lines climax at the same time, in a somewhat devastating way. All three actors are first-rate and the production very professional. It’s a relatively short play, just an hour and a half without intermission, and the time flew by.

Quotes & Highlights

  • Read The Second Wind's behind-the-scenes blog about the production.
  • "Ian Walker is a playwright, a director‚ and a novice detective... Walker’s scholarly legwork deeply informs his three-character play, which offers a disorienting take on what many people thought they already knew... humanizing the moment of the decision, the gravity of which is often lost in remembering the war's many losses." --SF Weekly

Description

1945. Berlin. The world is about to change. As the clock ticks down to Truman’s decision to use the atomic bomb against Japan, an American diplomat gambles on a power-play to further his career. Balancing his soul against his ambition -- and his German mistress against the atmosphere of revenge -- Will walks a tightrope of intimacy, power, betrayal and brutality.

Based on hundreds declassified government documents, personal letters, and diaries, The Tender King reveals a side of war as you've never seen it. San Francisco playwright Ian Walker is the winner of the International Larry Corse Prize, the John Golden Prize, Best Play at the Bay Area One Acts Festival, and a Dramalogue Award. He has been called "one of the Bay Area's most promising emerging playwrights," by the Oakland Tribune. "Walker writes with passion and a point of view," says the San Francisco Examiner. This breathless new drama by Ian Walker is as applicable to the Iraq war today as the world war sixty years ago.
