Set in 1960s Manchester, England, this poignant and comic play tells the story of Jo, a shy 17-year-old chafing against the constraints of her life in a working-class slum and the demands of her selfish, irresponsible mother, Helen. Helen soon deserts her daughter for a lover, but the tenacious Jo navigates romance, heartbreak, and poverty, never losing her sense of humor and optimism. Shelagh Delaney's first play was considered controversial in its time for its racial and sexual themes, but its powerful evocation of mid-century British life has made it an enduring masterpiece. Description
Adam Bock's signature syncopation provides the rhythm for this hilarious story of borders, letters, fonts and friendships. Anne Kauffman directs.
Adam Bock says: "I started The Typographer's Dream by wanting to write about a typographer. My job at the time was as an assistant to the principals of a design firm called MetaDesign - they did the most amazing graphic and web design, and while I worked there I fell in love with typography - which is the designing of text, the letters themselves and how they are placed on the page. Then I thought "well, if I write about a typographer, I should write about a geographer too. And maybe about a stenographer." That made me laugh. Then I started thinking about our work, and the question of "am I my work?" and how what we do every day creates the world we live in. I thought it would be interesting to use people's work to create their characters - for example, a geographer is concerned with boundaries - could a geographer have trouble with the boundaries in her own life?"
