San Francisco's Off-Market Theater and Hollywood's Theatre Asylum host Tilted Frame Network, the first improv show to take place in two cities at the same time. The show consists of two phases: in the first, audience members act as producers and writers, and their suggestions shape the show; the second phase takes things to the next level with long form improv and more audience involvement on and off stage as both cities jam online together.

As improv goes, it needs more professionalism. That said, it had its moments of levity, although the technology was a near-constant issue to be dealt with and got in the way. The cast should find a funny way to cover when glitches happen (regularly) rather than lob lame/wry comments or make excuses. Of all the live Internet bits I thought the side by side "Crossfire" debate worked the best...it's easy to focus on a two-shot on screen and not be distracted by the live local action.

Great concept, but terrible execution. The technology wasn't quite there yet - they needed a faster internet connection and everyone should have been individually mic'ed in each city - it was REALLY hard to hear what anyone was saying in LA.

Also, it felt like they were trying too hard with the technology - the portion of the show that was just San Fran didn't need the use of the camera backstage. Improv is actually funnier when it's less realistic - having had those "fake interviews" or "dream sequences" right next to the main action would have been much funnier than having them behind the screen being filmed and projected.

Finally, when Los Angeles didn't answer when they tried to reconnect, it felt very awkward. You're improv-ers.... do some improv in the meantime! Leave a funny message for LA, do SOMETHING! Having the awkward moment, and then the woman with crazy hair start World's Worst just didn't work. World's Worst didn't fit at all into the style of improv you were doing, and it felt VERY weird.

Overall, I give it a "just ok." Again - great concept. But work out the technological kinks and maybe get one or two more funny people to replace the not-so-funny ones!

Description

Tilted Frame Network (TFN), the only live improv show in the country which hooks up two casts in two cities via the Internet returns to Los Angeles and San Francisco. TFN entreats audiences in both cities to participate in shaping the Network's new "season" (short-form improv games based on TV, Film and Internet). In the first half of the show, audience members are treated as producers and writers and asked for suggestions to shape the shows they'll see that night. Once everyone is accustomed to Tilted Frame's signature techno improv format, Tilted Frame Network takes the show to the next level with long form improv and more audience involvement on and off stage as both cities Jam online.

Started during the dot com revolution, Tilted Frame has been pushing the envelope of multi-media production for more than seven years. Opening with Taste Like Random in the summer of 2002, Tilted Frame used video and the Internet in a way no other company had before. Now, with troupes in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Tilted Frame has further experimented with and expanded the format of the show to premiere the first-ever, recurring, cross-state performance in theater.
