Davies Symphony Hall is an appropriately majestic backdrop for the San Francisco Choral Society's performance of Brahms' monumental A German Requiem. Working from a German-language Bible -- rather than the Latin Catholic liturgy -- Brahms focused his elegiac composition on the transience of life, rather than the finality of death. In doing so, he transformed a potentially conventional piece of church music into what would later become the second most performed choral work after Handel's Messiah.
