Former music director Edo de Waart returns to perform with the San Francisco Symphony for the first time since 1997. The evening begins with an introduction to the music of Franz Schreker, an Austrian opera composer whose music combines the stylistic traits of several artistic movements and whose immersive scores are cinematic in their ability to draw the listener into the story. This innovative and once-obscure composer has seen a revival in popularity in recent years. The program also includes Rachmaninoff's sophisticated and modern Fourth Piano Concerto and the thundering Organ Symphony of Camille Saint-Saëns, his last and most dramatic symphonic work. Goldstar Member Tips

  • on Other
Second tier has excellent accoutics, and a good view of the orchestra as a whole.
  • on Where to Park
Take public transportation if you can. Especially if the opera is performing at the same time.
  • on What to Wear
A chance to dress up, but slacks are fine.

This SF Symphony & the SF Symphony chorus were wonderful, as always. And with MTT directing it made attending this performance a highlight. I'm only giving it 2-stars because I didn't particularly like the violin soloist Gil Shaham. There seemed to be something missing as he performed the music. I mainly went to hear the vocal soloists in Part 2, but they didn't get to do too much. Unfortunately, I wasn't familiar with the music beforehand, and have come to the conclusion I'm not a Berg fan. Definitely go however if you want to hear the chorus take centerstage. Their sound is definitely wonderful.

Berg: Violin Concerto
Schubert: Mass No. 6

Part requiem, part showpiece, the great Berg concerto finds an ideal interpreter in Shaham, who has explored it for years and played it often. Schubert's Masses are glories of the choral repertory and this one is no exception.
