Brilliant pairing of talented vocalists! I've seen Meredith Monk over the decades and this was one of my favorite performances. It was a seamless and inspirational collaboration. Kitka's 8 amazing vocalists interpreted Monk's compositions with liveliness and and ease. It was like hearing 8 more Merediths! I find Meredith Monk's work as relevant today and it was for me more than 30 years ago, with its complex rhythms and emotionally evocative vocals. If you are interested in and open to music and vocals that push beyond traditional boundaries of harmony and rhythm, Monk's compositions offer a portal to a new experience. Meredith Monk is a cultural treasure whose work, for the musically adventurous, is not to be missed!Written on May 16 2011

A pioneer in extended vocal technique, internationally acclaimed MacArthur Fellow Meredith Monk has alternately been hailed as a "magician of the voice" and "one of America's coolest composers." The Bay Area's own Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble has earned global recognition for its unique and haunting sound which explores a vast palette of ancient, yet contemporary-sounding vocal effects.
For their first concert together, Meredith Monk has assembled an evening for Kitka encompassing two premieres and more than four decades of her trailblazing work. She will join Kitka in a program featuring the first performances of Phantom Voices and Quilting; the West Coast premieres of selections from Quarry, Volcano Songs, American Archeology #1: Roosevelt Island and The Politics of Quiet, plus excerpts from ATLAS, Book of Days, Facing North, Impermanence and The Games.
