Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor Roger Rees stars in this very hysterical (somewhat historical) one-horsed gallop through all things Shakespearean. What You Will is the one-man everything there is "to be or not to be" about William Shakespeare: the greatest soliloquies ever written next to side-splitting accounts of the funniest disasters ever perpetrated on the stage.

Simon and Janine are sent on an unexpected journey to the war-torn Middle East after their mother, who for years had remained silent, leaves them post-mortem letters with clues to the family's mysterious past. Their quest to unravel their origins leads them in search of a father and brother whose existence was previously unknown to them. Adapted into the Oscar-nominated film, Incendies, and translated into a dozen languages in over 100 productions worldwide, Scorched makes its West Coast debut at American Conservatory Theatre. The A.C.T. production features David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) as bumbling notary public Alphonse Lebel, who acts as a guide to the two twins in their search. Learn More

Good enthusiasm and a lot of interesting tidbits both from his personal experience and his insider's vantage point. The show seemed to lack continuity - it bounced from one sub-topic to the next without an overall thread. I also had some difficulty hearing all the lines; probably due in part to Rees' vestigal british accent.

Quotes & Highlights

  • "Exciting...charming...as [Rees] serves each little morsel, your wish is akin to Oliver Twist's: Please, sir, some more." --Washington Post
  • "The comic highlight of the year...not since Monty Python's Spamalot opened on Broadway have I laughed as heartily and often as I did at Roger Rees' one-man show." --North Adams Transcript
  • "At once merrily irreverent and respectful, audaciously dismissive and deserving, puckishly playful and protective, sublimely whimsical and wise...a delicious evening of theater in the fullest sense of the word." --Berkshire Eagle

Description

What You Will is a celebration of theatre's most impactful playwright, by history's most influential players. There's Romeo, Juliet's foolish Nurse, gory Macbeth, Hamlet and the oh-so-tragic Richard II, joined by the likes of Charles Dickens, James Thurber, Noël Coward and Stevie Wonder.

Roger Rees, a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for 22 years, won both Olivier and Tony awards for his acclaimed performance in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. American television audiences know him as the dashing English tycoon Robin Colcord on "Cheers," British Ambassador Lord John Marbury on "The West Wing" and Dr. Colin Marlow on "Grey's Anatomy." His films include "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "Frida," "The Pink Panther" and "The Prestige," among many others.
