Christopher Marlowe's timeless 17th-century tragedy follows the legend of the scholar Dr. Faustus, who delves into the dark arts and makes a legendary deal with the devil in order to gain access to ultimate knowledge and power. This world premiere adaptation of Marlowe's cautionary tale by San Jose Rep's award-winning Associate Artistic Director Kirsten Brandt uses state-of-the art stagecraft and cutting edge light and sound gadgetry to spirit audiences into a darkly foreboding and mischievous world. Through encounters with angels, dragons, the seven deadly sins and classical figures ranging from Helen of Troy to Alexander the Great, Faustus must ultimately determine whether or not he has made a wise bargain. Written on Jul 25 2011Alex Ramon dazzled my sons and I during his recent performance at the San Jose Repertory Theatre. His show combined stage illusions and slight of hand, involving the crowd with a refreshing style.
His interesting twist of such classic tricks including Coins, Cards, and Steel Rings left many shaking their head. Perhaps most interesting was a trick where Alex linked together rings from 3 members of the audience, which we are still wondering about. He also blended humor into his act complementing his obviously accomplished skills.
After the show, Alex and his stunning Assistant patiently shook hands with the crowd, posing for photos, signing autographs, accommodating kids and adults alike. He is a poised and accomplished young man, who formerly was the Ringmaster for the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus show Zing Zang Zoom.
If you love magic (like we do), we highly recommend that you see his show.
Written on Jul 25 2011Nice,but not more then that. Very simple.
Written on Jul 25 2011Mr. Ramon's show was thoroughly enjoyable. It was my daughter's first, full stage, magic show and she was enthralled. Was happy to have suggested it to friends and had two other families join us.
My wife was lucky enough to share her ring with him for a most amazing close up illusion. One of our friend's child was selected as a volunteer and it brought joy to us all to see him on stage as well. San Jose Rep is a completely intimate way to see and enjoy the mastery of Alex Ramon.
May Mr. Ramon continue to grow as a magician and entertainer. I'm certain we will be hearing more from him in the future.
