The San Jose Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Barbara J. Turner, provides the exciting live soundtrack to sjDANCEco's 12th season opener, highlighted by José Limón's 1958 Mazurkas, an emotional tribute to the Polish spirit, set to a Chopin score. San Jose's own award-winning contemporary company specializes in the work of Limón, a ground-breaking Mexican-American modern dancer and choreographer. Also on the program are Broken Memory, a 1980 work by sjDANCEco founder Gary Masters and a trio of world premieres from company choreographers and dancers Maria Basile, Heather Cooper and Hsiang-Hsiu Lin. Come early for a pre-performance discussion by Masters. Learn More
Ushering in Thanksgiving and the holiday season will be another World Premiere from Daryl Gray presenting CINEMA SOUNDTRACKS, danced to a score arranged by Bill Duncan. Last season Gray brought us “Pirates of Penzance.” He is one of America’s great theatre men. Two grand pianos and a stage filled with all the dancers in our company perform to the music of many of Hollywood’s greatest movie themes from “The Godfather”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, “Titanic”, “The Bridge on the River Kwai” and many more.
Rounding out the program will be Dennis Nahat’s_ GRAND PAS DE DIX_ (Dance for Ten) set to the music of Raymonda by Alexander Glazounov.
Artistic/Executive Director Dennis Nahat will present a short Pre-Show Discussion about the dances on the program 1-hour prior to curtain. Come hear about the creation of CINEMA SOUNDTRACKS and GRAND PAS DE DIX. Free. Meet in the Ridder Lounge of San Jose Center for the Performing Arts.
