San Jose Stage Company presents the world premiere of Buffalo'ed by Jeannie Barroga in collaboration with Alleluia Panis. Compellingly told through dialogue and movement, the play retells the story of the Buffalo Soldiers, descendants of American slaves who were stationed in the Philippines at the turn of the twentieth century, during both the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars. The military presence of the United States Army's Buffalo Soldiers during the Philippine occupation is a little-known thread in the fabric of American history. Anthony J. Haney directs the production at the Stage Theatre.

Reefer Madness: Musical Comedy Based on Camp Classic Film

Full Price:
$25.00 - $50.00
Our Price:
$10.00 - $25.00

In 1936, an anti-drug propaganda film called Reefer Madness was released. The movie portrayed the disasters that ensue when some young teenagers decide to try "marihuana," aka the devil's drug. In the 1970s, the film was rediscovered and became a cult classic due to its melodramatic portrayal of the alleged dangers of marijuana, which include death, destruction, madness and ... jazz. This tongue-in-cheek musical comedy inspired by the original film continues the hijinks in ever wackier form, memorializing the melodrama in song. Learn More

Below are a few notes I jotted down (the next day) on the survey & which was not turned in:
1) ..Change about play?
More about the Buffalo Soldiers - Less about Luisa & Captain
Make distinct or stronger switch from Escrima to Fil-dance (NOT to combine)
2) ..Characters most engaging?
CONNOR & NALDING
Gregory M. - Dancer
3) ..Confused by dialogue?
Too much info in beginning = DIDACTIC
Made too much distance between audience (not in the know) & historical facts
4) ..Dance element help?
Yes & No. Some dances too long especially:
white costumed dancer in-between Della & Linc= NOT NECESSARY- made disjointed.
5) ..Familiar with this piece of Fil-Am history?
Yes, but learned more -- Thank you!

Performances, plot, choreography, very good. Needs better flow or binding together. Just a bit of work and it would be excellent.

Fascinating tale that you do not find in your typical history books... Powerful story that leaves you emotionally and intellectually stimulated. You want to know more about this period of history after having your interest piqued. The choreography and escrima stick fighting scenes were lively and engaging. Dialogue was extremely powerful at times and laced with nuances and details that would benefit from multiple viewings.

This was a piece of American military history NOT taught in schools. The play was well done and I gone to other plays written by Jeannie. Kudos.
