Jesus Christ Superstar: Andrew Lloyd Webber's Epic Rock Opera

Full Price:
$24.00
Our Price:
$12.00

Winner of the 1972 Tony Award for Best Original Score, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar changed the face of musical theater forever with its debut on Broadway in 1971. Telling the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, this epic rock opera dramatizes Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his message and his popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate and his ultimate brutal crucifixion. Chart-topping songs such as "Superstar," "Everything's Alright" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him" dramatically highlight the struggles experienced by the world's first and most enduring of all celebrities. By turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, Jesus Christ Superstar illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit. Learn More

This is probably my favorite musical so I was a bit apprehensive about attending the CMT production. Not to worry. This was a fabulous production- I laughed, I applauded, I whooped. Could not have been better. Any seat in the Montgomery is good because it is such a small theater- I loved sitting in the balcony- great view of the stage.
Thanks CMTSJ for making my day!

Quotes & Highlights

  • The 1996 Broadway revival of Chicago has played nearly 6,000 performances since it opened in 1996. The production won the 1997 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

Description

Premiering in 1975 and the hit of the 1996 Broadway season Chicago won six Tony Awards including Best Revival and later the Academy Award as Best Picture of the Year. In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap...until he finds out he's been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess," Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American Dream: fame, fortune and acquittal.

Known both for its choreography by the famed Bob Fosse and the 2002 movie, which won six Academy Awards, the show flaunts celebrity, scandal, and corruption in Jazz-age Chicago.

Chicago is directed and choreographed by Kevin R. Hauge, artistic director for the award-winning Children’s Musical Theater San Jose (CMTSJ). Marquee Productions bring adult performers together to perform in benefit for the CMTSJ youth theater programs.
