San Jose Repertory Theatre presents this edge-of-your-seat stage adaptation of James M. Cain's classic noir novel. It's a treacherous tale of love and murder on the dark and dingy streets of 1930s Los Angeles. The beautiful and seductive Phyllis Nirlinger concocts a cold-blooded scheme to murder her husband, but not before first taking out an insurance policy on his life -- one which pays double if her husband dies in a fall from a moving train. Smart-talking insurance agent Walter Huff falls victim to the persuasive femme fatale's charms and, caught in a web of greed and lust, the adulterous couple commits the almost-perfect crime.

Although it was a little slow for my taste it was an all around great performance. I liked the story (and the plot twists) and the characters were engaging. I was impressed by the stage/set and how they were able to transform the set from one scene to the next with minimal props - very creative!

We felt the play was very dated and very slow. The sets were very distracting and the acting was not top notch.

It was a clever stage setting, and talented actors. The seats are crowded, and my neighbor kept elbowing me. It was distractive and not comfortable.
