More Information About John Francis, Author of Planetwalker: 22 Years of Walking. 17 Years of Silence

Description

Francis' pilgrimage began after seeing the devastating effects of the 1971 oil spill in San Francisco Bay. He made a personal decision to stop using all modes of motorized transportation, which later expanded to his unconventional vow of silence.  Francis' trailblazing journey took him from coast to coast, along the Pacific Northwest and over the Sierra and Rocky Mountains. Without speaking, he learned to communicate his understanding and empathy and earned college and graduate degrees in science and environmental studies as well as his Ph.D. in land resources. After spending 17 years in silence, Francis will share his experiences, wisdom and personal commitment to the environment.
