To protect their daughter, Sonia's parents send her to the United States during the Cuban revolution in 1961. She never sees them again. Thirty years later, Sonia, now a devoted Midwestern mother, has created a home that combines her own cultural traditions and her husband's Jewish faith. Shorty after 9/11, their son announces he is quitting college to join the Army. Well done and thought provoking play. Informational about the Cuban revolution and the Cuban children sent to the US. It shows the long term effect of political upheaval on people.

Description

Written by Melinda Lopez
Directed by Richard Seer

To protect their daughter, Sonia’s parents send her to the United States during the Cuban revolution in 1961. She never sees them again. Thirty years later, Sonia, now a devoted Midwestern mother of two, has created a home that combines her own cultural traditions and her husband’s Jewish faith. Shorty after 9/11, their son announces he is quitting college to join the Army. Sonia must combat renewed feelings of abandonment brought by political forces that once again threaten to shatter her family.

Can Sonia come to terms with her secret past, her parents’ decision, her children’s choices and her duty to her adopted country? Set in Minneapolis in 2001 and Cuba in 1961, Sonia Flew questions parental sacrifice, familial responsibility and patriotism in times when worlds collide.
