As much a cultural phenomenon as a theatrical event, Cats enjoyed a record-breaking run on Broadway and in London, thanks to its feline-inspired costumes, memorable songs by famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and fun character names like Grizabella and Rum Tum Tugger. Now the play is being brought to life by Children's Musical Theater San Jose, starring actors age 14 to 20. The story, inspired by a collection of poetry from T.S. Eliot, revolves around a tribe known as the Jellicle cats, and their leader Old Deuteronomy, who'll choose one of their group to be reborn that night after their annual ball. The longest-touring Broadway musical in history, Cats features 20 of Webber's timeless melodies, including the hit song "Memory," and was the winner of seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Saw "The Grand Duke" last night, performed by the Lyric Theatre (Gilbert & Sullivan Society). This rarely-performed Gilbert & Sullivan opera is filled with great tunes, often hysterically funny dialogue, and a plot as twisted (in a good way) of any grand opera.
I laughed a lot, and Lyric Theatre presented some of the funniest performers you are likely to see on a stage in a while, who wholeheartedly threw themselves into the absurdity of the characters and made them their own.
I heartily recommend this show. Only one weekend left!
