A gleeful romp through some of Broadway's most beloved numbers and two exciting world premieres will take center stage as Smuin Ballet closes out its 20th anniversary season with XXcentric. Choreographed by the company's late, great founder Michael Smuin, Dancin' With Gershwin explores the evolution and reinvention of American dance, with a little help from the Great White Way. The world-premiere ballet But now I must rest comes from Smuin choreographer-in-residence Amy Seiwert and draws inspiration from the lush music of Cesária Évora, aka the Queen of Morna. The program's other world-premiere piece, choreographer Val Caniparoli's Tutto Eccetto il Lavandino (everything but the kitchen sink), blends the music of Vivaldi and the company's high-energy athleticism with wit and reflective beauty. This was a first class show. The dancers were amazingly expressive, graceful and energetic. Their acrobatic feats have to be seen to be believed, especially with Moria's crawling hands and arms behind her head ! Turns that transformed ordinary skirts into geometric 3-dimensional skirts were so cool, just one of the many neat features of the show.
Choreography was mesmerizing, a wonderful blend of both traditional cabaret and tribal styles. Background, music, and lighting all done to perfection. Last but not least, the drummer was charming and lightning fast ! The newly remodeled Montgomery theater was lovely and comfortable, there were abundant staff to help everyone with smiles.
