As a former long time resident of Chicago and frequent consumer of improv comedy there, I was looking forward to seeing The Second City's Touring Company on their stop in San Jose. As several people have noted, the performance was very heavy on the sketch comedy and pretty light on actual improv. In fact, had the group not come back for a "3rd act" of improv games it would have been almost bereft of improv.

That said, it is a talented group, and I always enjoy the topical material and fearless "push the envelope" approach to the comedy that they take. Was some of the material borderline offensive? Yes, but when you are dealing with issues/themes such as sexuality, religion, politics, etc. - all hallmarks of The Second City if you are familiar with them - you are bound to push audience members buttons.

The fact of that matter is that humor is very subjective, so some of the jokes went over better than others. Over the course of a 2-hour performance that is bound to happen. But where else other than Second City can you see a sketch featuring author Charlotte Bronte as a stand-up comedian and a pitch perfect spoof of a segment on NPR? A very enjoyable night all-around.

This venerable comedy troupe's San Jose debut has gotten some poor reviews so we weren't expecting much. Big surprise: the act was terrific. We laughed the entire show. The performers are skilled at comedy, the sketches were almost all very funny, some sidesplitting. Although the act isn't "blue" (there's not an "F" bomb every other word), there are some adult words and themes. Note: There are half a dozen round tables set directly in front of the stage to create a cabaret atmosphere and to give the performers some victims to interact with. Arrive early and ask to be upgraded to one of those tables if you love comedy.

The venue was great with parking right beside the theater and good seats in parterre section. The performance was good but not great- a few exceptional skits and a few tasteless and/or aimless skits. It was interesting to see the improv aspect in action for (only) a few of the sketches.

Extremely disappointing.. we heard such great things about 2nd City,
but this felt so amateurish, almost painful at times.
There were a few good laughs, and 2 outstanding female performers (I don't remember their names, but one was a multitalented, beautiful Asian woman and the other was an adorable tiny pixie-type). The 3rd woman was good too, while the men were all mediocre. The scripted material was mostly awful, just flat and stupid. The improvs seemed canned and really dull. And it went on way too long. The audience was definitely not begging for more, but the group went on and on with one lame set after another. I hope the resident 2nd City group is a whole lot better than this one!!

Was a little disappointed. Expected it to be better, maybe expected too much.

I've been a major fan of 2nd City, but this performance was NOT funny at all! Luckily, the fire alarms went off just after intermission, we vacated the building, and never went back.

No bad seats at San Jose Rep. The performers were very good. Some of the sketches were funnier than others, but I had at last a couple of laugh-until-I-cried experiences, and things don't hit my funny bone that often. All three of the women were especially gifted comedians. I recommend this show.

The San Jose Rep is great, but Second City wasn't. I wanted to love it, but I didn't. Most of the "script" was tired and cheesy, predictable and playing off bathroom and lowest-common-denominator humor and old jokes. Sadly, I walked out at intermission rather than waste another hour of my time. Lots of people WERE laughing but, for the life of me, I have no idea why. Maybe gas!

We purchased our tickets through Goldstar, and since we got such a discount, we expected to be somewhere up in the "nosebleed" seats. Imagine our surprise when we found our seats, right down on the front row! We found the comedy funny, very much in time with current events, and extremely creative. We had a great time! Thanks!

The touring group had well planned topical skits, and it integrated audience ideas quite well. All 4 of us enjoyed the show. Seats were quite close.

We had a great time and laughed throughout the show. Very entertaining and talented cast. The San Jose Rep is a great venue for this act. I sure hope The Second City Touring Company comes back again next year!

I had a great time and my friend laughed so hard at one point tears were rolling down her cheeks. Having done sketch comedy and improv a lot of my performing life, I truly appreciate bright, comedic minds. I was glad they all came back for more Iprov work after the supposed end of the show as there were only two improv games during the show. I love going to see shows at San Jose Rep as there isn't a bad seat in the house.

PIcking up the tickets at will call was easy. The San Jose Rep site was comfortable, and it was easy to see the performers on the stage. All four of us enjoyed the first two acts. We thought the third act, added on as a "bonus", went on a little too long.

Very fun evening. Good humor. Great seats in a relatively small theatre.

Lacked sufficient dialogue, relied primarily on audience feedback.

Uneven is the best word I would use to describe Second City's performance. While there were occasional laugh-out-loud moments, much of their "encore/third act" was flat and painful. The sketch comedy was definitely their forté. I might go again, but it would have to be for about 1/2 of the price I paid on Goldstar.
