San Jose Repertory Theatre presents Theresa Rebeck's bitingly funny backstage comedy The Understudy. A smug (and daft) Hollywood action star lands a prestigious role in Franz Kafka's newly discovered play on Broadway. The stage manager takes this in stride ... until she finds out that the star's understudy is her ex-fiancé, whose presence still makes her knees turn to jello and her words sound like a baby's babbling. Even worse, the understudy has a huge chip on his shoulder about playing second fiddle to a less serious actor. Can this love-sick stage manager prevent a battle royale from developing between the two rival actors? Will the show go on? Pulitzer Prize-nominee Rebeck, the creator and producer of the hit NBC show Smash, and one of the most produced female playwrights in America, returns to the San Jose Rep stage with this latest off-Broadway hit that looks at all the genius, bitterness and ridiculousness underscoring a life in showbiz.

Christopher Marlowe's timeless 17th-century tragedy follows the legend of the scholar Dr. Faustus, who delves into the dark arts and makes a legendary deal with the devil in order to gain access to ultimate knowledge and power. This world premiere adaptation of Marlowe's cautionary tale by San Jose Rep's award-winning Associate Artistic Director Kirsten Brandt uses state-of-the art stagecraft and cutting edge light and sound gadgetry to spirit audiences into a darkly foreboding and mischievous world. Through encounters with angels, dragons, the seven deadly sins and classical figures ranging from Helen of Troy to Alexander the Great, Faustus must ultimately determine whether or not he has made a wise bargain. Hilarious and thoroughly entertaining, The Understudy pokes fun at actors, Hollywood, and even Franz Kafka. Theresa Rebeck's script is excellent, and the three (almost four) person cast delivers a superb performance, going from amusing to hilarious to just plain bizarre. As two actors and the stage manager attempt to rehearse scenes from a play, their personal issues (ego, a failed romance between two of them, dueling artistic interpretation, and their opinions of Kafka) all get in the way. Add to that a disappearing tech manager who can't get the lighting and music cues right, and you have just the kind of mess that makes for a wonderful night of entertainment.
Don't miss it.

Very slow at the beginning but near the end was more interesting and picked up.
The end!

Three of us went to the Wednesday night performance. We loved it! It was funny and kept us entertained throughout. We volunteer at local theaters which made it that more entertaining for us. The cast was perfectly matched with the characters. We enjoyed it so much we plan to get a group of people together to see it again.
