By the Way, Meet Vera Stark: Sly Satire Skewers Hollywood Racism
- Full Price:
- $43.00 - $55.00
- Our Price:
- $21.50 - $27.50
Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. Written on Nov 09 2009We had excellent seats in the orchestra. The show was only 1 1/2 hours long, but it was entertaining. However, they did a lot of Cy Coleman's more obscure songs.
Written on Nov 09 2009Enjoyed the show a lot. The tribute did a good job of setting Coleman's work into context even for those unfamiliar with it (like my date); made good use of film/video clips, and had terrific performances of the songs.
Written on Nov 09 2009I liked this venue, next to the San Mateo HS and free parking. Women's restrooms had lines of course, around 6 stalls but moved fairly quickly.
Seating is not clearly labeled, thank goodness for all the ushers showing everyone where they sit. The legroom was a little tight.
I think I was the youngest person there, mostly purple haired old ladies and men at the 2pm Saturday matinee.
The format of the production was different but I liked it, a commentator then Cy's lyricist collaborator gave personal accounts of working with Cy, some movie footage and 4 performers singing selected songs with a piano.
Around 1.5 hours, no intermission and the timing was fine.
Hearing 'If they could see me now" from Sweet Charity was awesome.
Snacks and Cy Coleman's CD were sold in the lobby.
Written on Nov 09 2009The performers were all delightful, especially Jason Graae! And the stories told my Mr Zippel and the interviewer were a nice added touch. A very different experience from last season's Stephen Schwartz show. Left me wanting more!
