Widely considered to be one of the top three ballet companies in America, San Francisco Ballet invites you to attend three performances from its 2014 season in the opulent War Memorial Opera House. This package allows you to see some of the most exciting dance performances in the country, some of them being staged for the first time ever. Your SF Ballet experience begins with the season opener, Giselle. One the greatest romantic ballets in the classical repertory, this is the heartbreaking tale of a peasant girl with a fragile heart, a passion for dancing and a weakness for a man who belongs to someone else. Next, you'll attend a program of three ballets that includes an exciting world premiere by Val Caniparoli, as well as encore presentations of two critically acclaimed works from the 2013 season. The final performance is Cinderella, Christopher Wheeldon's magical new production of the fairy tale ballet that was so popular last year it's been brought back for another round. Just "Ok." We attended a 2pm performance and the theater was filled with kids who were obviously bored and more interested in kicking seats, listening to ipods, and running up and down aisle. Between the distractions of the children around me and the incessant crying of a newborn who's parents must have decided was adding atmosphere to the performance, I found it difficult to enjoy.
The performance itself was mediocre at best. There is clearly more work needed, especially amongst the more junior members of the cast. The featured dancers were good, however, some of their support for the dance numbers could use a bit more time in training. Timings were off, stage positioning forgotten, and stage fright was apparent.
I would feel robbed if I had paid full price for these tickets and, even at a 50% discount, I felt it was barely tolerable.
Peninsula Ballet Theatre presents Carlos Carvajal's time honored holiday classic, Nutcracker with full symphonic orchestra conducted by Chris Christensen. See the Christmas tree that grows, the celebration, the battle between the toy soldiers and the Rat King, the Snow Forest and the Land of Sweets. Meet the dancers on stage after every performance.
