The San Francisco Symphony, under the baton of conductor Kirill Karabits, spotlights violinist Alexander Barantschik and violist Jonathan Vinocour for a performance of Benjamin Britten's Double Concerto. Written as a tribute for Britten's composition teacher when the composer was just 18, the Double Concerto is a challenging piece that requires immense technical skill on both the violin and viola. Written on May 16 2011This event was pleasant. The orchestra was amazing. The choir O.K. The highlight was really the Barritone. His voice was lovely with rich tones and a beautiful tenor quality and if he lacked anything in voice, he made up for it in personatlity that resonated out to the audience in a playful way. The Soprano, on the other hand, was just plain boring. Her voice was o.k. although it lacked in any feeling, or variety in volume, emotion etc...and was just plain boring. She also looked like she had just walked through a wind tunnel and didn't seem to fix her hair for the occasion. I know that sounds bitchy, but we all know appearance is part of the experience and she didn't seem to care as she was sloppy. We left at intermission.

Peninsula Symphony’s 62nd Season closes in May with an exhilarating evening of vocal and orchestral showpieces featuring Bay Area Opera stars, Soprano Heidi Moss and baritone Eugene Brancoveanu, and the Stanford Symphonic Chorus. The program will include gripping moments from such great operas as Carmen, I Pagliacci, Aida, The Barber of Seville, La Traviata, Rigoletto, and Faust.
This concert brings the drama and majesty of grand opera to the stage, with superb vocal soloists, and the 140-voice Stanford Symphonic Chorus, plus members of the Stanford Chorale joining the Peninsula Symphony on stage. The program covers a wide range of the most beloved scenes from Romantic Italian and French operatic literature.
Soprano Heidi Moss and baritone Eugene Brancoveanu -- fresh from his triumph with the New York Philharmonic last month and whose performance of Carmina Burana with the Peninsula Symphony recently was so thrilling -- are Bay Area favorites and scintillating performers.
