Take a doo-wop and Motown music-filled journey through the streets of Skid Row to a struggling flower shop where meek worker Seymour has discovered an exotic plant that makes him an overnight sensation. One problem: the plant apparently craves human blood. This campy classic -- one of the longest-running shows in off-Broadway history -- was based on a '60s B-film and later made into an '80s blockbuster starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. Relive delightfully dark tunes like "Somewhere That's Green" and "Suddenly, Seymour" as the nerdy-but-lovable underdog romances his sweetheart and fights the monstrous plant -- which, it turns out, is actually an alien intent on world domination. Broadway by the Bay always does very good regional musicals. This was classic, great music by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. We found the singer portraying Joe to have the voice, but not the roots/empathy of the originals. Also, singer/actress cast as Magnolia has the voice, but is too mature for the role.
Show Boat covers one of the most dramatic eras in American history, from Reconstruction to the Roaring ‘20s. Against this panorama unfolds a saga of romance, racial tension and family survival with one of the greatest scores ever written. Songs include “Old Man River,” "Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man" and “Bill.”
This is Broadway by the Bay’s premiere production of the Hal Prince version of this classic and the show’s 80th anniversary. Show Boat is a valentine to America and show business!
Music by Jerome Kern
Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Based on the novel Show Boat by Edna Ferber
