The praise for Sir Tom Stoppard's masterpiece Arcadia could not be more effusive. A reviewer from The Daily Telegraph gushed, "I have never left a play more convinced that I had just witnessed a masterpiece." Whereas The Independent wondered if it might be "the greatest play of its time." The reason for such enthusiasm might be found in Stoppard's uncanny blend of brainy discussion and down-to-earth emotion. In this play alive with ideas -- about Byron, entropy, history and heat -- the human characters are never lost or diminished, but somehow made more real by their participation in a conversation that seems to span centuries. Set in a sprawling English country house, Arcadia moves between the 19th century and the present through a series of love stories, while characters from both eras discover connections, unearth mysteries and unravel hidden truths. Artistic Director Carey Perloff helms the American Conservatory Theater's dazzling new production of this modern-day masterwork. Learn More

Written on Aug 12 2009Not as polished as I expected yet still very entertaining.
Written on Aug 12 2009Have always loved King and I. Music was good, acting quite good.
Theatre generally comfortable, but with 4 stall ladies room, and about 50 people in line before the curtain, about 20+ of us missed the curtain.
Written on Aug 04 2009The King and I was excellent.
Written on Aug 03 2009This was a delightful musical with elaborate costumes and talented actors, singers and dancers (maybe one or two under standard), good direction and fine orchestra too. Even my husband, who always says he doesn't like musicals, was enjoyed this one with me.
Written on Aug 03 2009The event was great! The musical was VERY enjoyable, and everyone in my party of 5 all agreed it was a very fun musical to watch. I even thought it was better than a few of the Broadway musicals I've seen!
Parking is not a problem, as there are plenty of spaces behind the theatre.
I would definitely recommend this musical to everyone I know... GOOD JOB!
Written on Aug 03 2009This should have been a perfect evening. The show is a classic, location is great, parking plentiful, building is nice. As the curtains opened, we were impressed with the costumes and cast. Unfortunately, the event was harder to love the more we sat in the horrible chairs. I can't imagine seeing another show here after this experience. The chairs are old, small, and exceptionally low to the floor. It'll be expensive, but worth it, to renovate. I THINK the show was great, can't really remember as I'm still rubbing my back.
Written on Aug 03 2009This was a wonderful musical play and excellent cast. I enjoyed very much and was I very pleased specially because of the price I paid throu Goldstar.
Written on Aug 03 2009This was the first performance I attended by Broadway by the Bay, and it will not be the last! "The King and I" was marvelous, with wonderful costumes, dancing, and acting. I can't believe this cast is not on Broadway...they were that good! Despite the few minor issues with one main character's mic (the sound faded in and out a few times during her speaking parts), the production was great. The theater was comfortable and our Goldstar seats were waaaay up close! The location of the venue was super convenient and parking was plentiful...keeps the stress down and makes the evening that much more enjoyable!
Written on Aug 03 2009Great seats. Perfect price. The two Equity actors were amateurish.
Written on Aug 03 2009We thought the overall production was fine. The voices were quite good, especially the the 2 principle singers.
Although we live in SF, we found it quite convenient to attend this production. Had dinner in Burlingame and got to the theatre in no time at all. However, I would say that San Mateo offers more variety in restaurant choices.
Written on Jul 29 2009A great production of a classic show! Great voices, beautiful sets and costumes, and a lush and full orchestra made this an enjoyable evening.
The production was done in a very traditional way, and true to the original, which might play a little slow for some modern audiences, but I felt like this is as close as I'd ever get to experiencing it the way the original audiences might have felt seeing it on Broadway when it opened. The energy and characterization of Anna and the King roles really brought great warmth to the show. And can I mention again the fantastic voices in this show full of well-known Broadway tunes? I really enjoyed it!
Written on Jul 28 2009My husband and I loved this performance. The acting, singing, sets (spectacular!), costumes were all excellent. The casting was also very good. I wonder if it was not possible to get black actors to do the slave parts? All of the rest were superbly in character. I was really amazed with the quality of the singing and dancing. I enjoyed seeing that the cast was also pleased and enthusiastic with the performance.
You provided us with a thoroughly enjoyable and stimulating evening.
Thank you.
Written on Jul 27 2009Very professional cast...beautiful backdrops...cute children...seats were purchased a few days before and were good
Written on Jul 27 2009Excellent singing. Good orchestra, surprisingly good dancing, Very good sets. Great costumes. Decent acting.
Enjoyed it very much.
Written on Jul 27 2009It was a terrific show. The music and voices were wonderful. The dancing excellent. Even the sets and costumes were excellent. It was a very professional performance. We loved every minute and are inspired to return to the same venue for another show.
Written on Jul 27 2009I really loved it. I have seen this show in NY with Yul Brynner twice when I was growing up: the original and the revival. It's hard to compete with that but I thought they did a great job. Imagine my surprise when I realized that Jared Lee, the King, had been my substitute teacher years ago! Better keep him on the stage.
Written on Jul 27 2009This is a wonderful production in every way. Great singing, dancing and stage sets. Extremely professional performance. The only drawback is the seats at this venue which can be a bit cramped. However; there are usually open seats to move to. The seats will not accommodate larger humans.
Written on Jul 27 2009The actors seemed uneasy and the performance was subpar. The theatre was extremely under ventilated. People kept fanning themselves with the playbill which could be very distracting. We didn't even stay for Act 2. 80% of the audience were seniors from around the neighborhood. Everyone seemed to know everyone.
Written on Jul 27 2009Outstanding performance!! Voices were superb, costumes were gorgeous, and total production equal to or better than some Broadway productions. We were completely transported to Siam in the 1800's. Mrs. Anna's interpretation of Shall We Dance still haunts us, almost reverent and beautifully sung. Absolutely thumbs up!!
Written on Jul 27 2009Very well done performance. The sets were quite impressive for a short-term production and the singing was very good.
Written on Jul 27 2009Fantastic show. Very inventive "play within play" of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and of course wonderful singing of the original Rodgers and Hammerstein songs.
Written on Jul 27 2009This was my first experience at Broadway By The Bay and regret now that I have not seen other productions! An highly professional production with a very talented local cast. Well directed with exceptional cherography aided by excellent sets/costumes. I look forward to becoming a regular audience member.
Written on Jul 27 2009Superb production. The whole show was just fantastic. The singing, acting, staging, dancing, costumes and sets were all awesome. It felt like a Broadway production, and I have seen a lot of Broadway!
Written on Jul 27 2009Excellent production. Anna and the King had beautiful voices. My first time in this theatre. I was impressed with Goldstar searing.
Written on Jul 25 2009Excellent production, costumes and set decoration to rival any Broadway show. Great cast, especially the King and Anna who had such a beautiful voice.
Written on Jul 22 2009This was a very entertaining evening and the standard of the performance was very high. Highly recommend to those who enjoy theatre and musicals.
Written on Jul 22 2009We went to the first showing on 7/17/09. It was a very good show for the most part. Enthusiastic acting, singing, and dancing of all the characters both adult and children. The orchestra music was a bit disappointing to me in that they didn't seem to have as much feeling as the movie's score. Maybe it was the first night or just the selections for the play. It may improve with future shows. Total show time around 2.75 hours so be prepared to sit for a long time.
Written on Jul 21 2009an outstanding cast, especially the one playing the King and the one playing Anna. both were excellent and couldn't have been better played. the only down side of the evening was the lack of air condition and for some people it was unbearable. even though management realized this, there were no fans or doors left open to air out the room.
Written on Jul 21 2009I have to agree with the pervious comment...I too am always impressed with Broadway By the Bay. They do a fabulous job. The acting is always believable and the props are very detailed. In addition, i have never been given bad seats from Goldstar. We sat in the Orchestra section about 15 rows back. My guests were so impressed that we were lucky enough to get seats like that for half the price! We had a great time.
Written on Jul 21 2009I really loved it! The performance was as good as anything I have seen
in San Francisco.
Written on Jul 20 2009Loved it. The musical was fantastic! The music, singers and sets were really good!
Written on Jul 20 2009The King and I is a classic with memorable songs. Broadway by the Bay dis sincere justice to the music, it was performed by the cast in Broadway quality!!!!!!!!
Written on Jul 20 2009Leads were strong.
Orchestra was mostly good but some weak sections detracted from overall quality.
Excellent production overall.
Written on Jul 20 2009Another fabulous production, a definite winner.
Written on Jul 20 2009Seats were a little uncomfortable for the long show, but a great bang for the buck show. Sets and costumes were beautiful. All performances were solid.
Written on Jul 20 2009My daughter and I went to Friday nights performance and enjoyed it immensely. We had very good seats. From past experience, I never book tickets for an afternoon show at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center as there is no air conditioning at this venue. Due to the heat,I had to leave Fiddler on the Roof when BBB did it a couple of summers ago. Well done BBB on another great production!
Written on Jul 20 2009I am always impressed with Broadway by the Bay and the productions that they put on. This was no exception. I was pleased with our seats and the production was phenomonal. The only complaint that I have (and have had in the past) is that the venue has no air circulation and gets really warm.
Written on Jul 20 2009great show..the Uncle Tom's Cabin scene is fabulous...Broadway in NY could not match it...
Written on Jul 20 2009The music and costumes were wonderful. The actors were great and had absolutely beautiful voices. The theater was a little too warm the evening we were there otherwise the venue was very nice - our seats were really good with an unobstructed view of the stage.
