San Francisco Symphony Concertmaster Alexander Barantschik leads the orchestra in an irresistible program featuring works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Britten and Piazzolla. Following a lovely early Mozart Divertimento, Barantschik takes center stage in Mendelssohn's D minor Violin Concerto, one of the Romantic master's finest creations and a delightful surprise for concertgoers who only know its more famous sibling. Britten's gorgeous Simple Symphony salutes the composer's centenary, and the program concludes with the sultry music of another 20th-century master: Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, the "King of Nuevo Tango." Inside Music, an informative talk with Laura Stanfield Prichard, begins one hour prior to the concert. Learn More

This group of excellent musicians was sabotaged by an underperforming sound system, especially in the first show. Overly loud to the point of distortion, the singers were outmatched by the amps. Second show was considerably better, although by then about half of the audience had left. As for the performance itself, HBR tends toward long songs with repetitive lyrics with heavy jazz influences. They seem more in tune with their audience when they hold more closely to traditional tunes.
Quotes & Highlights
- "Few things rejuvenate the soul like a warm fireside drink after an exhausting day in the snow. Hot Buttered Rum has that effect. Their original songs are instantly familiar and inviting, and their easygoing versions of timeless classics (the Beatles, Hank Williams) belie the intricacy of the arrangements." --San Francisco Chronicle
