In 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming, college student Matthew Shepard was savagely beaten, tied to a fence and left to die because he was gay. Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney were arrested for the kidnapping, aggravated robbery and attempted first-degree murder. A month later, director Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project conducted more than 200 interviews with the townspeople. From those interviews came The Laramie Project, a brutally honest and thought-provoking play about an outraged nation and a stunned Wyoming town. The Laramie Project has been one of the last decade's most performed American plays and was also adapted into a 2002 HBO movie. Mysterium's production is directed by Stephen John and features Joe Parrish, Jill Cary Martin, Jeff Lowe, Tiffany Berg, Teddy Lance, Jessica Runde, Gregory Cesena and Meghan McCarthy.

Shakespeare at the Mysterium: Four Plays by the Bard Presented Outdoors

Full Price:
$20.00
Our Price:
$10.00

Mysterium presents an exciting summer Shakespeare Festival with four immortal plays by the Bard presented al fresco in the courtyard. Bring lawn chairs, a picnic dinner, drinks and a blanket and settle in for a classic tale of comedy, romance or tragedy. The festival kicks off June 9-24 with The Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare's battle-of-the-sexes tale of the feisty Katherine and the bachelor Petruchio who knows just how to "tame her," which he must do if Kate's sister Bianca is also to get a husband. Next up (June 30-July 15) is the darkly comic Merchant of Venice (Beach) which finds Shylock, Antonio and Portia warring over a pound of flesh in present day Venice Beach. Director Marla Ladd infuses the tragedy of Othello (July 21-Aug. 5) with the Steampunk influence, using bits of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction to recount the tragic story of the Moorish general Othello who is tricked by the villainous Iago into believing his wife Desdemona is unfaithful. Finally, Much Ado About Nothing (Aug. 11-26), Shakespeare's romantic comedy of the mismatched couple Beatrice and Benedick, is relocated to 1950s Havana, a "Latin Las Vegas" of nightclubs, drugs and, of course, love. The play was well paced, thought-provoking and extremely well acted (by some people I recognized from other local productions). I’d highly recommend this play despite a few minor annoyances (there is no need for any character to light a real cigarette in such a small theater, either pretend to light it, or use an electronic cigarette, also the music during he first set was a little louder than some of the actors). The time flew by and the staff did a good reminding attendees about the run time and 2 intermissions. I definitely felt a stronger connection to the story and various issues that were highlighted (including hate crimes, the beliefs of the Mormon church, the struggles by homosexuals, and what it was like to live in a rural college town)

Well staged, directed and acted performance of this thought provoking play.
An attractive venue managed by a very friendly and accomodating staff.
Will look to go back to this theater.

I really enjoyed this production. The 8-member cast portrays a much larger cast of characters, and so there's a risk that some of them may become muddled together. Here though, the actors really bring something unique to each of his or her characters so that they leave quite an impression with the audience. Standouts for me were Joe Parrish, and Tiffany Berg and Jessica Runde (their mothter-daughter pairing was perfect), but really, great job everyone!
