Speaker: Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute and Author of Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Plant Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble
Title: China: Forcing the World to Rethink our Economic Future
Environmental scientists have been arguing for some time that we need to restructure the global economy so that it can sustain economic progress. This argument is not new, but there is now convincing new evidence from China that the existing economic model--the fossil-fuel-based, automobile-centered, throwaway economy--cannot sustain progress much longer.
In his newly-updated book, Lester Brown outlines an economic plan, a budget, and a timetable to rescue our 21st-century civilization and sustain economic progress. This plan includes eradicating poverty and stabilizing the population; protecting and restoring our natural resources; and conserving the earth's biological diversity. Brown estimates that the budget for this effort comes to $161 billion, a fraction of the world's military budget of $975 billion.
