1956, 20th Century Fox, 128 min, USA, Dir: Henry King
Phoebe and Henry Ephron (Nora’s parents) adapted this unusually dark musical about a carousel barker and a mill worker whose love falls victim to jealous outsiders and hard times in 19th-century New England. Oklahoma! castmates Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones are superb singing and dancing to some of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most distinctive songs, including “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “Soliloquy” and “If I Loved You.” With Cameron Mitchell as the ne’er-do-well Jigger Craigin. Screening format: 35mm.
Participants are current at time of publication, but subject to change.
