Created by Michael Kearns (who was commissioned to write “Stonewall Rapture” for the recent Gay Men’s Health Forum in West Hollywood), Gay Powered journeys from the streets of Greenwich Village in the late sixties to the streets of West Hollywood in the 21st Century, encompassing the Stonewall Riots and the ongoing No on Prop 8 campaign. You’ll “meet” a host of characters—from Candy Darling to Kevin Spacey, from Andy Warhol to Anderson Cooper.
Derek Ringold is a multiple-threat artist (writer-actor-dancer-choreographer) who's taken on stage roles in Pippin, Balm in Gilead, Bricklodge, Into the Woods, P.S. Your Cat is Dead, Teen Witch Live!, Daddy’s lil’ Girl, Danger Force Five, and his recent multi-media solo performance “So Hard - A Black Gay Man Navigates West Hollywood in a New America.” He has also appeared on television in General Hospital, Cold Case, and OZ . He has danced with the Joffrey Ballet Jazz Outreach, and performed/choreographed stage shows at Key Club and Avalon in Hollywood. Ringold is also a Barack Obama look-a-like impersonator and has appeared at events for Esquire Magazine and Rock the Vote.
John W. McLaughlin, a graduate of New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts, is an openly gay actor, producer, writer, and activist in Los Angeles. Currently, he is co-producing and starring in the feature film Meth Head which is now in pre-production.
Michael Kearns’ artistic outpourings, during the past three decades plus, is unparalleled. As an artist-activist, he has accumulated a virtual library of material that uncompromisingly addresses the GLBT community with a special focus on HIV/AIDS.
Highways Performance Space is Southern California's boldest center for new performance. Founded in 1989, Highways continues to be an important alternative cultural center in Los Angeles that encourages fierce new artists from diverse communities to develop and present innovative works. Highways promotes the development of contemporary socially involved artists and art forms. Our mission is implemented through four programs (the performance space, workshop/university program and two galleries). Annually, Highways co-presents approximately 250 performances by solo dramatic artists, small theater groups, dance companies and spoken word artists; curates and exhibits approximately 12 contemporary visual art exhibits per year with work that explores the boundaries between performing and visual art forms; commissions and premieres new work by outstanding performing artists; organize special events, curate festival, offer residency and educational programs that engage community members in the arts while providing access to professionally-directed instruction.
