Spring Awakening took Broadway by storm when it debuted, winning eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical). Punctuated by an electrifying and hauntingly beautiful rock score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, Spring Awakening follows a group of teenagers as they navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence and their budding sexuality. Based on an Expressionist play that caused a scandal in 19th-century Germany, it's a bold and touching musical that captures the timeless and turbulent experience of youth transitioning to adulthood. The characters must grapple with issues like teen suicide, pregnancy and identity -- tough topics that remain as relevant as ever. Learn More

This play is, at best, a mediocre high school or junior high school production. Unless you are a relative of one of the participants, you will find the acting quality abominable. The adult muscle beach dude is just as bad or worse. I won't spoil the play by telling you the plot (though if you have ever seen those early beach movies, you know more than enough). I love the theater, having spent some of the best moments of my life on the stage or in front of it. Because of that love, I am very patient with actors, venues, writers and directors, giving them the benefit of the doubt and time to improve on weak beginnings. I found that patience overtaxed within minutes by this "surf spoof"; the acting and directing were inexcusably bad. We fled the theater at the first black out. That early exit now sits in my memory as one of the best theater experiences of the year!
