  • on Where to Park
Street parking competes with anything going on across the street at Crossroads athletic facility.
  • on Where to Eat
Pretty much junk snacks & wine, beer (?).
  • on Where to Park
Arriving 30 minutes before curtain a good idea to get on the lot or find street parking.

Enjoyed the combination of acting, singing & dance by artists of varying ages. A bit long, but several days later still pondering all aspects, glad I went.

Description

Kevin Spicer, curator of 2005’s The Murder of Emmett Till – Fifty Years Later, returns to Highways Performance Space with The Emmett Till Project, a new series of performance works commemorating the 55th anniversary of the lynching of fourteen year-old Emmett Till on August 28, 1955, a murder that mobilized the civil rights movement.

Five years ago in August, a gathering of performance and visual artists converged at Highways, presenting a powerful weekend exploring the story of Emmett Till. Three nights of sold-out, standing room only crowds were enthralled and entertained. “It was a magical experience,” says Spicer, “something that greatly exceeded all of our expectations. Because that event is so special to all of us -- both performers and those in the audience -- it is important not to try and duplicate that. It would be impossible to recreate the energy of that weekend. Honoring Emmett with an all-new event feels like the appropriate thing to do. The collection of artists and stories for the 2010 performance will be a wonderful achievement all to itself.”

Renowned performance artists Christopher Benson, Mark Broyard, David Crittendon, Jason Luckett, J.M. Morris, Paul Outlaw, S. Pearl Sharp, Kevin Spicer, Pat Taylor and others present original performance/music/dance pieces exploring the theme of Emmett Till.

Accompanying the performances is an installation of visual art on the Emmett Till/Civil Rights theme, including sculpture, digital prints and painting from Toni Scott, mixed-media work from Mark Broyard, digital prints from George Evans and Alisa Adona, and paintings from Lori-Antoinette, Candace Hunter, Robert Lowden, The Butler and others.
